Week 02 - Use of Silhouettes

I found this week's assignment to be very challenging. Not because of the assignment itself, but mainly because of the character I chose. Captain Nemo. A character seemingly from a bygone era. Capturing that kind of a character's likeness into a weapon that they would use is very challenging. There wasn't much online reference other than stories and legend to use. So a lot of the reference had to be sourced from the mans life story as well as his personality and interests. Nemo was a intelligent royal native of India that had much education in the Victorian Era Britain during his youth. He excelled in nearly everything that he did, but found interest in art, art history, world cultures, as well as science and many others. With this information alone I chose to design the weapon with steampunk and sci fi themes in mind. I felt that with the scientific brilliance of Nemo with his ship the Nautilus and his love for art, an advanced ornate steampunk hand cannon or rifle would hold true the characteristic of this legendary antihero.

Week 01 - Use of Basic Shapes

This is my finished drawings of the characters for this assignment. There are three separate characters based on shape language. There is one circular, square and triangular character.

So, for the character on the left. The Circular character. I really didn't know where to start. So I googled characters and one first ones that pop up was the Sackboy from Little Big Planet. So I rolled with it. I definitely was inspired by the stitching from Sackboy. I wanted to give it this rag doll look so I gave it sewn button eyes and a stitch mouth. I wanted to make the character appear more innocent in nature hence the rounded body and stubby legs. Overall, I liked the way that it came out despite my current PS skills with character art.

The Second character in the middle is my squared character. This character was inspired by a mix between Oscar the Grouch and Mater from Pixar's Cars. The idea is that it is an old dented trashcan monster with stained buck teeth coming of the lid. The concept was thought up with the idea that character is a grumpy old trash can that eats trash.

The character on the right is my triangular character. This one I definitely want to come off as villainous. I really didn't know where to start so I scoured the internet for inspiration and found a barracuda. I kind of leaned in the more mythical/ prehistoric nature of the design. I enjoyed the shininess on the scales with the dark contrast of the fins. I made the eyes glow a bit to give the impression of this being a deep see fish.
